چکیده

Abstract This study sought to compare the efficiency of different nitrogen (N) fertilizer forms applied perennial ryegrass swards that were rotationally grazed by dairy cows or sheep under Irish conditions for two three years. A 3 × 2 factorial random complete block design plot arrangement was used calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN), urea and + N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (urea NBPT) at 150 250 kg N/ha per year. Zero plots also added allow N be calculated. The conducted four sites, giving years data collection sites other sites. All observed similar responses type rate. Significant differences between treatments pre-grazing herbage yield (1346 1588 DM/ha, respectively; P < 0.001) total production (12 290 14 448 0.001). There no difference but a tendency higher CAN NBPT than (1485, 1480 1436 CAN, urea, = 0.091). Total significantly (13 478, 13 542 087 0.004). In conclusion, there an overall benefit detected over 10 site-years from using protected with v. urea.

Ryegrass Swards Compared with Perennial Ryegrass Swards on the Performance and Carcass Quality of Grazing Beef

An experiment investigated whether the inclusion of chicory (Cichorium intybus) in swards grazed by beef steers altered their performance, carcass characteristics or parasitism when compared to steers grazing perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Triplicate 2-ha plots were established with a chicory/ryegrass mix or ryegrass control. Forty-eight Belgian Bluecross steers were used in the first gra...

Effect of rumen fill on intake of fresh perennial ryegrass in young and mature dairy cows grazing or zero-grazing fresh perennial ryegrass.

Rumen fill may be a strong intake constraint for dairy cows fed on pasture, even though pasture is highly digestible in the grasslands of temperate climates. This constraint may also depend on the cows' maturity. Moreover, indoor feeding of fresh herbage may not always be a good model for the study of intake regulation at grazing. To test these hypotheses, four mature (6.3 ± 0.72 year old) and ...

Simulating perennial ryegrass cutting

Perennial ryegrass is one of the most commonly cultivated forage species in Europe, where grazing and mowing (cutting) are used to manage this resource. Cutting can be characterized by its intensity (height) and its frequency. Combinations of these two factors affect mono-species grasslands productivity and could also modify the genotypic composition of heterogeneous populations. Indeed, the hi...

Urinary nitrogen concentration from dairy heifers grazing kale supplemented with either plantain or perennial ryegrass baleage in winter

The effect of feeding two different supplements (perennial ryegrass or plantain baleage) on urinary nitrogen (N) excretion from dairy heifers (8 months old, 180 kg liveweight (LW)) grazing kale was examined in two successive winters. Heifers (n=90 and 80 in Years 1 and 2, respectively) were offered 2.5 kg DM kale/100 kg LW/day and approximately 3 kg DM/heifer/day of either perennial ryegrass or...

A Review of Perennial Ryegrass Endophytes and Their Potential Use in the Management of African Black Beetle in Perennial Grazing Systems in Australia

The major insect pest of Australian cool temperate pastures is the root-feeding insect Heteronychus arator (African black beetle, ABB). Significant pasture damage can occur even at low ABB densities (11 individuals per square meter), and often re-sowing of the whole paddock is required. Mitigation of the effects of pasture pests, and in particular subterranean species such as the larval form of...
